The Journal started life in July 1996 as a quarterly Newsletter consisting of a number of duplicated A4 sheets. After seven issues the format was changed to an A5 booklet, and in January 2001 a full-colour centrefold was added. In October 2003 the format was again improved to permit full colour printing and the name was changed to “Journal of the Hardy Orchid Society (JHOS)” from the January 2004 issue. Throughout this time the Journal has informed the membership of all the recent news and planned events of the Society. JHOS publishes diverse articles (mainly written by HOS Members) covering an enormous range of relevant topics. A complete listing of the Contents of all Newsletters and Journals is maintained here. When journals are four years old they are made generally available as pdf which can be downloaded from within the archive listing.

We maintain an index to article subjects and authors kindly compiled and updated annually by Colin Scrutton, a former Chairman of HOS.

jhos cover spring 2021

The front cover (above) features Gillian Elsom's photograph of Lady’s-slipper Orchid at Gait Barrows NNR and this relates to an historical account of the species in the 1930s by Paul Redshaw. Another of our rare species features in this JHOS with Rosie Webb's ‘must come back’ travelogues, this time focussed on the Ghost Orchid in Switzerland. Cultivation and conservation are two areas that do not get as much coverage as we would like but both are involved in an article from Svante Malmgren and Bill Temple describing their work with Himantoglossum metlesicsianum in Tenerife. The issue is rounded off with a review from Richard Bateman on a new Romanian orchid book.
