The HOS holds three one-day meetings during the year, spread around the country. The Spring Meeting, which incorporates the brief Annual General Meeting and the Plant Show, is normally held in the Oxford area. The Autumn Northern Meeting is usually held in September in northern England. The Autumn Southern Meeting, the final meeting of the year, is held around the end of October, in southern England and includes the annual Photographic Show.
At each of these meetings there is a series of talks and slide shows covering all aspects of hardy orchids. If you fancy giving a presentation at one of these meetings, the Chairman will be delighted to hear from you. A good way for a novice speaker to start is through our “5 Slides in 5 Minutes” sessions.
There are usually commercial plant sale tables, plus a “Members’ Table” where members may sell their surplus plants and orchid-related sundries; 10% of receipts go to the HOS. There is also an excellent lunch, and plenty of time to discuss all your problems and achievements with other members. Full details of all meetings, plus booking forms, are circulated through the HOS Journal and published on the HOS website.
In addition, the society organises a seed sowing workshop to provide essential information and hands on experience of orchid cultivation.
As well as the indoor meetings, numerous one-day outdoor meetings are arranged all over the country during the “orchid season”. These meetings are usually led by members of the Society, so if you fancy showing your favourite local orchid sites to a small band of like-minded enthusiasts, please let the Committee know. The programme for the year is published in the January Issue of the HOS Journal and on the website. These field trips are for HOS members only.
